Inside a Semi-Detached Side Extension in London

How long does a kitchen extension take

The extension of your home can make it more spacious, and comfortable and even improve on its value. If you’re looking for a way to add space and value in your kitchen, then an extension may be right up your alley.

A lot people live in houses where there’s already an open plan ground floor layout but if this isn’t ideal for whatever reason then adding side extensions might be worth consideration – these allow a lot more options when designing rooms within each bay depending upon what functions best within them such as a kitchen/dining areas.

London based Architects Paul Archer Design took on a two-storey house in to make it more energy efficient and comfortable. They refurbished the interior, adding new windows for better light flow as well as heating system + radiators throughout so that you can stay warm during those cold winter months!

Our clients purchased a late Victorian two-storey house in the Mapledene conservation area, close to London Fields. The house is semi-detached and because of its width all rooms are very well proportioned.

Prior to moving in the clients asked us to rearrange the kitchen, dining-area and adjoining spaces on the ground floor and possibly extend to the side. They wanted to achieve a strong link between the ground floor area and the lush rear garden. On the upper floor they asked us to transform existing rear extension into a master suite, with en-suite bathroom and plenty of inbuilt storage space.

We extended the house to the side with a simple glass-infill to make use of the small strip of land, allowing us to open the rear reception room to the garden. Allowing light from both open sides to flood into the reception rooms and create a very open and generous space. Towards the rear we introduced a set of minimalist sliding doors, creating a floor to ceiling contemporary bay-window over two-thirds of the rear elevation. This mirrors the geometry of the upper floor and leaves room on the side for a casement window above the kitchen sink.

We retained the original exposed brick external walls, which now act as a significant internal feature and also presents clearly the geometry of the original Victorian while the new extension is clearly readable. The garden has been planted with perennials, roses, bushes and shrubs, providing a lush setting for the property and a great view from the inside.

On the upper floor the spaces towards the rear were transformed into a generous master suite with stunning shower-room, throughout clad in dark grey terrazzo and equipped with solid brass fittings.
