Will Gamble Architects have transformed a semi-detached property in Croydon into a striking modern family home that balances contemporary innovation with a respectful nod to its local vernacular. Completed to much acclaim, the project has been featured in Dezeen, Enki Magazine, and Grand Designs Magazine.
At ground level, the rear extension reimagines the traditional colonnade with a modern twist. Its deep, angular fins, finished in rough microcement, draw inspiration from the roughcast render that defines the surrounding area. Between these fins, floor-to-ceiling glazing, complete with large pivot doors, provides seamless access to the garden, while angled soffits above the glazing enhance the sense of height and openness across the colonnade’s façade.

This distinctive architectural style extends to the second floor, where a red zinc-clad dormer, with deep, angled reveals, echoes the red clay tiles of the original roof. Together with a hip-to-gable extension, the dormer adds much-needed living space while maintaining a cohesive design language throughout the property.
The interior layout has been meticulously designed to create a harmonious living environment. At ground floor, an open-plan arrangement divides spaces subtly using walnut fins, which mirror the vertical elements of the external colonnade. The kitchen and dining areas face the garden, while a centrally positioned snug offers a cosy retreat. A formal reception room at the front of the house retains its original mouldings, beautifully restored to honour the property’s heritage.

The material palette is both contemporary and cohesive. Microcement flows seamlessly from the external colonnade into the interiors, forming worktops and a bespoke backsplash in the kitchen. The cabinetry combines black valchromat with walnut slats, adding depth and texture.

On the second floor, the master bedroom incorporates a bespoke desk space and a window seat, inset within the rear dormer’s angled cheeks. These thoughtful joinery elements frame dramatic views of the surrounding area and continue the walnut design theme, which runs throughout the home for a unified aesthetic.

This project is a testament to the vision of Will Gamble Architects, combining innovative design with a deep sensitivity to context and history. By blending contemporary architectural features with traditional materials and forms, this Croydon home stands as an exemplar of thoughtful and transformative residential design.
